Whenever we eat this, it brings back so many wonderful memories of our childhood. Our mum used to make it all the time. There is always some in the freezer, for “just in case”.

We loved having this on the weekends. It isn’t too bad if eaten cold either, so any leftovers were fought over for school lunches, lol.

You can easily double this recipe if needed, as it freezes well.  Just slightly undercook, so that when you reheat it in the oven it doesn’t burn.

Ingredients

  • 180 g block cheese
  • 8 slices bread
  • 1/4 tsp. onion flakes
  • 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp. mixed herbs
  • 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 15 g worcestershire sauce
  • 50 g tomato sauce
  • 150 g ham or bacon
  • 1 egg
  • butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 180ºC.
  2. Place cheese into mixing jug and blitz for approx. 5-10 seconds/speed 5 or into a blender jug and blitz for 5-10 seconds/medium speed. You want it nice and fine, but not pureed.
  3. Add everything else and mix for 5 seconds/speed 4/reverse or in a blender for 5 seconds/low speed until all combined.
  4. Butter one side only of each slice of bread and place this face down (butter side down) onto an oven tray, continue until all slices are done.
  5. Spread the top of each slice with the mixture.
  6. Bake in the oven for approx. 15 minutes until the underside of each slice is golden.
  7. Serve while still warm.
