Who doesn’t love a good old family meat pie??  It’s a real Aussie favourite, especially around footy season!  You can make this pie a large family size, or mini size.  Either way, the mix is great in all.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp. milk
  • 1 brown onion
  • 2 carrot
  • 1 zucchini
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1 kg beef mince
  • 1 sheet of shortcrust pastry
  • 1 tbsp. vegetable stock paste
  • 1 tbsp. bone broth powder (optional)
  • 30 g plain flour
  • 15 g worcestershire sauce
  • 50 g tomato sauce
  • 1/2 tsp. curry powder
  • 1/2 tsp. dried thyme
  • 10 g olive oil
  • 1 sheet of butter puff pastry
  • 1 tbsp. butter

Instructions

Thermal Cooking Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C.
  2. Add onion, carrots, zucchini and garlic to mixing jug and blitz 3 seconds/speed 7. Scrap down the sides, add oil and cook for 3 minutes/steaming temp/speed 2/MC ajar.
  3. Drain off excess liquid (tip: hold the simmering basket in place to stop the mix from falling out).
  4. Add mince and cook for 10 minutes/steaming temp/speed 1/reverse. Use the thermal spatula to push the mince around a bit whilst cooking if necessary.
  5. While the meat is cooking, grease a pie dish and place the shortcrust pastry into place in the bottom of the pie dish.
  6. Check the mince and if there is a lot of water drain it off (again, use the simmering basket).
  7. Add the rest of the ingredients and cook 5 minutes/steaming temp/slowest speed (again, use the spatula to push the mix around whilst cooking).
  8. Spoon into prepared pie dish and cover with puff pastry. Baste with milk.
  9. Cook in oven for 45 minutes or until the pastry is nice and golden.
  10. Serve with vegetables and mashed potatoes or some chips and salad.

Traditional Cooking Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C.
  2. Dice onion, carrots and zucchini and crush garlic to desired size. Add oil and fry off in pan over medium-heat until onion is soft and translucent.
  3. Add mince and cook for 10 minutes or until almost cooked. Drain off any excess liquid.
  4. While the meat is cooking, grease a pie dish and place the shortcrust pastry into place in the bottom of the pie dish.
  5. Add the rest of the ingredients and cook for 5 minutes or until cooked through.
  6. Spoon into prepared pie dish and cover with puff pastry. Baste with milk.
  7. Cook in oven for 45 minutes or until the pastry is nice and golden.
  8. Serve with vegetables and mashed potatoes or some chips and salad.
