Aussie Burger

Beef Burgers are one of the best takeaway options out there, well, so we used to think…now we know that they are potentially full of fillers, preservatives, food colours and so much more. Totally grosses us out now!

Next time you’re at the supermarket, have a look at the ingredients on those frozen burgers or ask your butcher what ingredients they use because quite often they’ll contain far more than just mince and spices.  Don’t settle for this, get some good quality mince, some freshly baked burger buns, good quality salad ingredients and make your own!  You’ll never look back!!

We would absolutely love you to leave us a comment below and let everyone know what you think. It’s comments like this that make our day and help us improve a recipe if we need to. We look forward to reading what you think!

Ingredients

Burger Ingredients

  • 500 g beef mince
  • 1 egg
  • 1 brown onion, chopped roughly
  • 1 carrot, chopped roughly
  • 3 mushrooms
  • 2 handfuls baby spinach
  • 1 tsp. mixed herbs
  • 15 g olive oil
  • 20 g sweet chilli sauce (optional - linked above)
  • 20 g tomato sauce - recipe linked above
  • 60 g homemade breadcrumbs

Fillings

  • eggs, for frying
  • bacon, for frying
  • salad fillings of choice - lettuce, tomato, beetroot, cheese, grated carrots, capsicum etc

Instructions

Thermal Cooking Method

  1. If making your own breadcrumbs, make these now. Simply place two pieces of bread into your thermo machine and blitz on speed 8 until they become crumbs. Set aside. (Tip - defrost bread slightly first if frozen).
  2. To make the burgers, place onion, carrot, mushrooms and baby spinach into your thermie jug and chop 3 secs/speed 6.
  3. Add all other burger ingredients (including the breadcrumbs) and mix 10 secs/reverse speed 4 or until well combined. If your mixture is too wet add more breadcrumbs. You may need to use the spatula to assist moving the mix around.
  4. Roll out into balls, and flatten with the palm of your hand. Heat a large frying pan, or BBQ until medium/hot and drizzle with a little olive oil. Cook the burgers for approx 8 mins each side, or until cooked through. Try to turn only once as you don't want them to fall apart.
  5. Fry eggs and cook bacon at the same time as the burgers. These won't take quite as long as the burgers, so we tend to add them once we have flipped the burger the first time.
  6. Whilst all that is cooking, prep the burger buns. Slice each bun in half and toast under a grill until golden.
  7. Also, slice, grate or prep the salad fillings of your choice. Assemble each bun with salads, as well as sauces, and add the cooked burger once these are ready. Eat immediately

Traditional Cooking Method

  1. If making your own breadcrumbs, make these now. Simply place two pieces of bread into your blender and blitz on high until they become crumbs. Set aside. (Tip - defrost bread slightly first if frozen).
  2. To make the burgers, place onion, carrot, mushrooms and baby spinach into a food processor and chop for a few seconds on a medium speed.
  3. In a large bowl, add all burger ingredients and mix really well, by hand is best. Get those fingers dirty and squish everything together.
  4. Fry eggs and cook bacon at the same time as the burgers. These won't take quite as long as the burgers, so we tend to add them once we have flipped the burger the first time.
  5. Roll out into balls, and flatten with the palm of your hand. Heat a large frying pan, or BBQ until medium/hot and drizzle with a little olive oil. Cook the burgers for approx 8 mins each side, or until cooked through. Try to turn only once as you don't want them to fall apart.

  7. Also, slice, grate or prep the salad fillings of your choice. Assemble each bun with salads, as well as sauces, and add the cooked burger once these are ready. Eat immediately
