Day six of our Additive-Free Challenge is all about swapping it up. In this podcast episode, we talk about healthy snacks for all those on-the-run parents, especially on family days and sporting events.

It’s so easy, and super tempting, to grab junk food whilst out and about, especially sporting events. So we challenge you to SWAP it up and bring your own snacks this week. Take the time to make a simple peanut butter sandwich, you’ll get good healthy fats with it. Pack a whole big packet of fresh fruit instead of lollies. Make a fruit salad of your own. Instead of those super cheesy snacks bring your own cheese and crackers. Pop your own popcorn, take plain chips or rice crackers. Whip up a simple smoothie to take with you.  And, of course, instead of getting one of those coloured drinks, take your own water bottle.

We press the point that kids simply aren’t elite athletes and therefore don’t need the sugary sports drinks. It’s pretty easy to get fooled by the heavily marketed sports drinks and foods. These drinks are filled with artificial food colours. Lots of these colours are linked to behavioural issues, asthma, skin irritations, headaches, migraines and so much more. So instead of fueling them (as the marketing states), these drinks are actually harming them.

The crux of this episode is about making better choices. There are a zillion better options that are available for quenching your thirst or hunger, without all the hidden nasties and sugar spikes!

You really have plenty of options for your family days or even your everyday life. If you can cook, that is super great, if not then these simple swaps can really help. Take note of those recipes that are super easy to make and plan everything the night before, this would really help you for a stress-free morning.

It’s all about making mindful decisions for better health!
