I was totally, utterly shocked to see that my pack of baby wipes contained such harmful stuff!

We found a nearly used packet of bought wipes and after looking at the ingredients, we were SHOCKED!

I started to make my own baby wipes because, well, I thought it would save me some money – which it did.  We used these wipes every since, and still use them now, even though my children are older and not in nappies… They are great for camping and wiping dirty feed and hands, they are great to wipe down dog paws or even to give the bench a quick clean. Using this recipe as a base you can create wipes for not just babies, but also camping, cleaning, floors and more!

Using essential oils is optional but it does make them smell nice. As a guide use 1-2 drops for a newborn, then 2-3 for a toddler. Please make sure to use pure essential oils and not synthetic fragrances.

Here’s the ingredients list of what was in my store-bought baby wipes:  Water, Cocamidopropyl PG-Dimonium Chloride Phosphate, Glycerin, Sodium Benzoate, Citric Acid, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E).

#WOWZERS!

Keep reading if you’d like to know what they mean…  if not scroll down and you’ll find the recipe

Cocamidopropyl PG-Dimonium Chloride Phosphate – It appears that Cocamidopropyl PG-Dimonium Chloride Phosphate is a preservative.  It apparently offers excellent conditioning properties.

Glycerin – this is a sugar alcohol compound.  It’s meant to be non-harmful, colourless, tasteless and great for attracting moisture to the skin.

Sodium Benzoate – is a preservative.  It is one of the cheapest mould inhibitors on the market, so is extremely attractive to large businesses.  Sodium benzoate, the synthetic chemical, is derived from a reaction of benzoic acid with sodium hydroxide. Sodium benzoate is actually the sodium salt of benzoic acid.   This preservative should be avoided by asthmatics, it has also been linked to leukaemia and other blood cancers.  This is due to the combination of sodium benzoate and citric acid (or ascorbic acid/vitamin C).  When these two ingredients are combined they form benzene, which is a cancer causing chemical.   We cover Sodium Benzoate in much more detail in our e-course, Additive Free Made Easy.

Citric Acid – No known side effects, unless mixed with Sodium Benzoates.

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract –  (Aloe plant) It is unknown if this has been processed with synthetic chemicals in these baby wipes.

Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract – I am guessing that this comes from the Chamomile plant.  My research didn’t show a lot of answers for this ingredient.

Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E) – Tocopherol is the primary active form of vitamin E.  Tocopheryl acetate is a fat-soluble vitamin that can be isolated from vegetable oils.  This can be extracted from nature or synthetically produced.  It is great for using in sunscreen because of its UV protective barriers.

#dontsressit if you use purchase wipes.  Just check the ingredients and make a decision for yourself.  There are organic wipes on the market, and water wipes which are great, but making your own is soooooo easy and cheap!

It is no secret that we love our doTERRA oils, and part of that love is because they are 100% food-grade oils and tested to the highest of standards.  Personally, we do not trust any other brand to be as safe as doTERRA, so please, if you use another brand of oils you will need to ensure they are of the highest quality and not adulterated in any way.

Ingredients

  • 1 strong paper towel roll
  • 700 g boiling hot water
  • 3 tbsp. fractionated coconut oil
  • essential oils of choice

Instructions

Thermal Cooking Method

  1. Add water and fractionated coconut oil together in a large jug. Once cooled slightly add essential oils of your choice, ensuring you are sticking to safety guidelines around dilution rates.
  2. Stand your paper towel upright in a container. If you need to cut the paper towel in half, do that now.
  3. Pour the water mixture over the top of your paper towel. Be sure to use all the water as it will soak it up. Leave this for 10 mins until it cools down then remove the cardboard tube.
  4. Once cooled they are ready to use. Pull single sheets from the inside (where you removed the cardboard roll). Or alternatively, you can separate each sheet, fold it in half and place in a flat container. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 months.
