Hey there, sports fans—and we mean fans of all ages! Have you ever wondered if those colorful sports drinks are really necessary? Especially for our kids who are just out there having fun, not exactly running a marathon. Today, we’re diving into the world of sports drinks and asking the big question: Do we really need them? And more importantly, are they even safe?

Many believe these drinks are meant for professional athletes, but here are factors to consider

  • Intensity of the Sport: Not all sports are created equal. A child playing a casual game doesn’t necessarily need electrolyte replenishment.
  • Duration & Weather: The length of the game and weather conditions can influence how much a child sweats and the consequent need for hydration.
  • Hydration Levels Before the Game: If a child is well-hydrated 24-48 hours before the game, there might be less of a need for sports drinks.

The Dark Side of Sports Drinks

While they may promise electrolyte balance, many sports drinks are loaded with artificial colors, flavors, and other additives. Even those marketed as ‘healthy’ or ‘clear’ may have hidden harmful ingredients. A very popular label is “sugar-free,” which often contains a harmful additive called aspartame.

But the reality remains… there was a time when these colorful sports drinks didn’t exist, and we all managed to survive. Could natural hydration sources have been the key?

When you sweat, you may need to replenish four things: Magnesium, Calcium, Potassium, and other minerals in your body. All of which can be found in safer alternatives.

Natural Alternatives

Coconut Water: A natural electrolyte, but it’s mainly potassium-heavy and may not provide a full spectrum of minerals.

Fruits: Oranges, watermelon, and grapes are not just refreshing but can also help with hydration.

Natural Sports Drinks: Brands like Trainade* (use code ADDITIVEFREELIFE for 10% off) and Pure Sports Nutrition (sorry we don’t have a discount code for them) offer healthier alternatives without harmful additives.

If you have found a sports drink you want to buy and are unsure if it’s an additive-free option, then simply use our Additive-Free Lifestyle App to scan the ingredient label.  Our app will tell you if there are any nasties lurking within, so you can make an informed choice.

Time for a Change

Educating the next generation is crucial. Instead of grabbing a sugary, artificially-colored drink, going natural or opting for a cleaner sports drink brand can be the key. By adopting healthier habits now, we’re setting up our kids for a lifetime of better choices.

Remember to always do thorough research when considering the nutritional needs of your child or any athlete. What works for one may not necessarily work for another.
