We get a lot of questions about the best skincare options for teens or tweens, so in this shortie episode we’d like to share our hints and tips.

First off, pimples are normal for teenagers as they go through puberty.  Their oil glands get stimulated when hormones become active and often it settles down.

However, in today’s world with more processed food than ever before, our teenagers’ gut health can often be in a dismal state of affairs which can affect their skin too.

We are sure you know this, but we’ll say it anyway…

Encourage washing of their face morning and night using a low-tox cleanser.

We find the doTERRA HD Clear Cleanser perfect for tweens and teens.  It’s a foaming face wash and is gentle and effective.

🔥 HOT TIP: Reuse the bottle and make your own travel-sized  foaming hand wash.  One of these lives in my handbag and I use it in public toilets, for travelling etc.

At this age, they may not need a toner

Although it could be a good habit to form early on, it can help regulate the pH balance of the skin.  doTERRA has a toner in their Verage Skincare System – which is what Tracey and I use every day.  It’s a good idea to try and stay away from alcohol in toners as it’s incredibly drying to the skin.

🔥 HOT TIP: Make your own toner

Alcohol-Free Toner Recipe

What you need:

50ml spray bottle

10ml Distilled or filtered water

30ml Witch hazel (alcohol-free)

1 tsp Aloe vera gel or ¼ tsp vitamin e oil

15 drops essential oils of choice (options below)

Method:

  • Combine all ingredients in a spray bottle and shake to combine.
  • Shake bottle each time before use and spray a thin later directly onto face (with eyes closed) after cleansing. Alternatively, spray onto hands or a cotton pad and dab over the skin (this is what we do).

Essential oils options:

  • Helichrysum
  • Roman Chamomile
  • Melissa
  • Tea Tree
  • Lavender
  • Frankincense
  • Ylang Ylang

But if DIY isn’t your thing, then simply buy doTERRA’s Verage Toner instead.

Finish off with a beautiful moisturiser

We recommend the HD clear Facial Lotion:

The HD Clear system also comes with a HD Clear essential oil blend which is great dabbed onto problem areas before you moisturise.  It contains skin benefiting oils, such as Black Cumin Seed Oil, Ho Wood Leaf, Melaleuca Leaf, Litsea Berry, Eucalyptus Leaf, and Geranium Plant essential oils.

Nutrition

Obviously, a great diet full of real whole foods is your best bet, but we know – they’re teenagers!  Try to discourage anything that could totally destroy their gut health like Red Bulls, V’s, Powerades (sports drinks – an episode coming soon about them), excessive sugar, ultra processed foods, etc.

Have these types of conversations with your kids and although there will probably be a load of eyerolls, and a lot of pushback… they’ll still be listening.  I wouldn’t try to control too much because you’ll only get rebellion, but just do your best.

The Pill

Often GP’s will refer the pill as their first point of call, however, the pill can do major long term hormonal damage, so before you let a doctor pop your child on the pill for their skin, PLEASE do a lot of research around this and think about it carefully.  A good place to start would be to get some advice from a naturopath or holistic nutritionist.

There are safer antibiotic creams rather than internal antibiotics and many options around so pause, do your research, and then decide what’s best.   We aren’t saying medical intervention is a hard no from us because doing nothing can also have side effects like anxiety, depression, being a recluse (not wanting to go in public), being teased at school etc.  What we are saying is to get curious and LOOK INTO EVERYTHING.

Apart from the HD Clear range the only other company that my teen daughter has liked is the sensitive skin cleanser from Australian Natural Soap Company.  This soap has left her skin feeling amazing too and so a shoutout to a company selling eco-friendly, low-tox products too.  Yay.
