Do you have any idea what preservative 282 is, or where it is hidden? Do you understand the impact it has on your overall health?

Day one of this challenge is all about preservative 282, so let us share with you what this preservative is and what some of the side effects may include… we think you may be a little horrified after learning this info, but please know, there are alternatives and you don’t have to go without a household staple.

What is Preservative 282?

Preservative 282, or Calcium Propionate, is used to slow down the growth of mould and other microorganisms giving food a longer shelf life.

Calcium Propionate (282) is linked to various issues such as:

  • sleep disturbance
  • behavioural issues
  • skin irritations
  • headaches
  • migraines
  • stomach ulcers
  • it is also recommended that asthmatic people should avoid this

Most loaves of bread these days last at least seven days without going mouldy, which is simply not what bread is supposed to do! If your bread lasts for more than 24 hrs then there might be something in there that you should be avoiding.

Additional ingredients to watch out for on your next purchase:

  • Artificial Food colours

    • You can find this mostly in wraps. A perfect example is spinach wraps, at first, you might think these are healthy since they are called spinach wraps, they must be loaded with goodness and vitamins, right. But NO! These wraps are dyed with artificial food colours to make them green, the only spinach to be found is some flavouring…totally gross!
  • Vegetable Oil

    • When we say vegetable oil we don’t mean like coconut oil. We mean the ones that are generally bright yellow and in clear plastic bottles called vegetable oils. These oils are highly processed, modified seed oils which are not great to consume. They are extremely harsh on our intestinal system and gut health, and our bodies have a hard time processing it, thus giving us the sluggish, tired, bloated feeling.

  • Preservative 200 (Sorbic Acid)

    • This preservative helps bread lengthen its shelf life, helping reduce mould from growing. However, this preservative is linked to skin irritations, asthma, heart palpitations and can exaggerate behavioural issues. Not cool for a loaf of bread!

Now don’t worry you can still find bread that doesn’t contain these ingredients, it’s just worth looking around the supermarket or the bakery or better yet bake your own!
