When was the last time you gave your washing machine a good clean? I am embarrassed to say that mine had been a while… and it had mouldy, muddy dirt trapped under the rubber seals – gross!!

- Here’s what you will need.

- Dirt and mould love to live under the seals.

- Pull those seals back.

- Make sure you get right in there.

- Looks what comes out… gross!

- Don’t forget to clean the door all around, front and back.

- Now it’s time to clean the drum.
Obviously these images are based on my front loader, but you get the idea of what you need to clean, just apply it to your top loader.
This mouldy dirt ends up on your clothes and then on your skin – not ideal!! No matter if you think your machine is clean, it probably isn’t… I am a prime example of that.
Having a clean washing machine will not only save your clothes, but it could also save your health.

TIP: If you don’t have the doTERRA foaming hand wash, then use 1/4 c white vinegar and 20 drops clove and tea tree essential oils or 1tbsp doTERRA cleaner concentrate instead.

Ingredients
Multi-Purpose Spray
- 1 spray bottle
- 1/4 c white vinegar
- 3/4 c filtered water
- 20 drops tea tree essential oil
Drum Clean
- 1/4 c bicarb soda
- 1/4 c doTERRA foaming hand wash
Instructions
- Add all multi-purpose spray ingredients to the spray bottle and shake to combine.
- Spray and wipe down all over the rubber seals, making sure to wipe inside the seal.
- Spray and wipe down all over the door (inside and out), and wipe down the front and top of the machine.
- Now add the bicarb soda directly into the drum.
- Add the foaming hand wash, cleaner concentrate or white vinegar and essential oil solution (depending on which one of the three you choose to use) to the laundry liquid dispenser and turn your machine onto a drum wash/machine wash setting. If your machine doesn't have this setting, then simply turn it onto the hottest wash you have and let it run the entire cycle.
- It's a good idea to clean your washing machine like this once every three months.
- Make sure to keep your machine door and liquid dispenser drawer open between uses to air out and dry. This will help to prevent mould.
I wipe down my machine after each round of washing so that nothing grows in my machine. That includes the door, the front and back seals and the dispenser. Then I leave the door open, so that it dries out.
For the insides, an occasional run through with a cup or two of vinegar and some tea tree oil seems to do the trick. I haven’t had any issues with mouldy smells from the machine since I started doing this.
