If you look up a bottle of a popular itchy bite spray that takes the sting out, you will see that the ingredients are listed as Active Ingredient: Aluminum Sulfate 200mg/mL (20% w/v). That’s it! We have no idea what’s in the rest of the bottle!!!
After some research this is what we found out about whether aluminum sulfate is safe on the skin:
Dangers and Warnings
When aluminum sulfate is mixed with water, it forms sulfuric acid that burns human skin and eyes. Contact with the skin causes a red rash, itching, and a burning feeling while inhalation irritates the lungs and throat. When inhaled, it immediately causes coughing and shortness of breath. Eating aluminum sulfate has an extremely negative effect on the intestinal lining and stomach. In most cases, a person will start vomiting, be nauseous, and have diarrhea.
Doesn’t exactly instill confidence about wanting to spray this on your skin when it can easily get mixed with water, does it?
Give this recipe a try instead, the oils in it will soothe the sting and itch. They sure have for both our families, it is all we use now.
