Is it just our family or does every child just love spag bol?? Honestly, whenever I ask my kids what they want for dinner it is “spaghetti bolognese”…
So tonight I used similar ingredients except I turned them into meatballs and served with gluten-free pasta. Worked a treat.

Ingredients
Ingredients
- 1/2 brown onion
- 1 garlic clove
- 1 tbsp. olive oil
- 1/2 c breadcrumbs (gluten-free works well)
- 1 tsp. dried thyme
- 500 g beef mince
- 1 large egg
Sauce Ingredients
- 20 g olive oil
- 1 carrot
- 1 red capsicum
- 1 400g tinned diced tomatoes
- 60 g tomato paste
- 1 tsp. dried basil
- 1/2 tsp. salt
Instructions
Cooking Method
- Start by making the meatballs. Finely dice the onion and garlic and heat olive oil over med-high heat. Cook the onion until translucent.
- In a large bowl add all meatball ingredients, including the onion. Mix together well and roll into walnut size balls.
- Add more olive oil into the frying pan and start cooking the meatballs on each side for 5 minutes.
- Grate the carrot and finely dice the capsicum. Add this to the pan and cook for 5 minutes stirring carefully so as to not break up the meatballs.
- Add all remaining ingredients and allow to slowly simmer for 20 minutes.
- Serve with pasta of choice.
Super easy. Double the mixture, I cook up the meatballs and freeze to pull out a few at a time for lunches. Great flavour even without the sauce. But awesome with sauce too.
Hi, don’t know what I’ve done wrong but no steam got into the varoma to cook the meatballs……..it was cold and uncooked.
Hi Erika, sorry this didn’t work for you and I want to thank you for the review. I have just re-worded the recipe to ensure you leave some space around the paper, this is the most common reason for food not cooking in the steaming tray :) Tracey
