How well do you really know your meat? Where does it come from? There are a lot of misleading products out there, falsely branded for advertising purposes.  In this episode, we are going to debunk myths, as we dive deep into the world of sustainable seafood and ethical meat farming, featuring Damien Moffatt, co-director and founder of ButcherCrowd.

How ButcherCrowd is revolutionizing the meat industry

ButcherCrowd is changing the game by providing all-natural, additive-free meats throughout Australia. They partner with accredited farmers who share their values, ensuring a fair price for quality produce. According to Damien, this is how food should be.

Is your beef grass-fed or grass-finished?

Most of what you will see in the supermarket has a label of “grass-fed”, which can be misleading. They have a ruminant digestive system, which suggests they can only eat grass, but the majority of meat is being fed with grain at the end of their life to quickly increase their weight for more money. That is not how nature intended it to be. To be completely healthy and safe, our beef and lamb must be grass-finished, or 100% grass-fed.

Avoid free-range chicken… Go with pasture-raised

Most farmers lock their chickens inside a shed to protect them from predators. But Damien disagrees and believes that chickens should be allowed to roam free, as nature intended. This is why all their chickens are pasture-raised, allowing chickens to roam free and exhibit their natural tendencies. This is completely different from free-range chicken, which only means the chickens were given access to the outdoors but do not live freely outside.

Another major concern in the poultry industry is the rampant use of growth hormones to increase size and weight rapidly. ButcherCrowd makes sure that all their accredited farmers are not using antibiotics and growth hormones to make the chickens bigger.

Ethical fishing is a must

All fish must be wild-caught using a net or a trap to preserve sea life. These are fish caught in their natural environment, and their diets have higher quality compared to farmed fish. Farmed fish are often given antibiotics and non-organic foods.

Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as overfishing. On the other hand, using bombs or any other methods will harm everyone in the water and might cause scarcity. Other animals could also be damaged, such as dolphins, seals, and turtles. Careful management and sustainable methods are what’s going to preserve water life.
